|Description:||Are you interested in a challenging job helping astronomers unlock the mysteries of the Universe? The W. M. Keck Observatory operates the world’s two largest optical/infrared telescopes located on the summit of Mauna Kea on the Big Island of Hawaii. The Observatory seeks a Night Attendant to work primarily at night on the summit of Mauna Kea, in close support of the Observing Assistants and scientists. |
|Duties:||Under the supervision of the Night Attendant Supervisor, this staff member works to maintain safe, secure, productive conditions during nighttime operation of the Observatory for maximum observing efficiency. Regularly checks current performance of Observatory subsystems, including the laser guide star system, via periodic monitoring of computer interfaces and direct visual inspection of equipment. Troubleshoots nighttime problems independently or with a team, as required. Serves as laser spotter on nights when LGS system operates. Performs cryogen fills, telescope/instrument reconfigurations, and slitmask milling as required. Works daytime summit shifts as required in between nighttime shifts. Ideal candidate should be a motivated self-starter who can manage multiple tasks and priorities within a fast paced environment. Candidate is expected to work a flexible schedule to support night-time operations. |
|Qualifications:||Minimum qualifications include two years work experience in a responsible position; ability to work at high altitude (13,600 feet) on a continuous basis; flexibility to work weekends and holidays, including occasional day shifts; valid driver’s license and excellent driving skills. Electronics, mechanical, computer, and/or safety experience is desirable.|
